It’s 7:15am on a Saturday, the game starts at 8, and you’re standing in the garage realizing you have no idea where the cleats went. Every sports parent has lived this morning at least once.
A reliable packing system fixes this permanently. Here’s what actually needs to be in the bag – and how to make sure it’s there every single time.
The Core Essentials
These go in the bag no matter the sport:
- Uniform (full set – don’t forget the often-forgotten piece like socks or a belt)
- Proper footwear for the sport and field/court conditions
- Water bottle – filled the night before, not morning-of
- Snack for between games or after practice
- Any required protective gear (mouthguard, shin guards, helmet, etc.)
- Registration/ID card if your league requires it for check-in
The “Almost Forgot It” List
These are the items that don’t matter – until the one day they do:
- Extra hair ties or headbands
- A change of socks (especially for outdoor sports in wet conditions)
- Sunscreen and a hat for day games
- Hand sanitizer or wipes
- A small first aid kit (blister pads, tape, bandaids)
- A backup uniform piece if your league allows substitutions (jersey, in particular)
- Cash for concessions or parking
Weather-Specific Additions
Hot weather:
- Extra water (more than you think you need)
- A cooling towel
- Electrolyte packets
Cold weather:
- Layers that can come off as they warm up
- Hand warmers
- A dry towel for the bench
Rain:
- A poncho or umbrella for the sideline
- A plastic bag for wet/muddy gear on the ride home
Build a System, Not Just a List
The real fix for forgotten gear isn’t a better memory – it’s a better system:
1. Designate one bag that lives in the same spot and is used only for sports gear.
2. Pack the night before, not game-day morning, when everyone is rushed.
3. Do a “shoes on the feet” check before leaving – the single most commonly forgotten item is footwear left by the door.
4. Restock immediately after each game, not the night before the next one. Replace used snacks, refill the water bottle, and toss it back in its spot.
A Note for Multi-Kid Households
If you’re packing for more than one athlete, color-code bags or use labeled packing cubes inside one larger bag. Trying to mentally track three kids’ gear in your head on a Saturday morning is a guaranteed way to leave something behind.
Keep a Master List Somewhere Visible
Tape a laminated checklist inside the garage door or mudroom closet – wherever the bag lives. A two-second glance before walking out the door catches 90% of “we forgot the ___” moments before they happen.
